Friday Freebie: Survival Lessons

Yeah, I know, it’s been quite a while since I’ve done one of these posts.
But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been stockpiling free resources for you!
Last week, I was watching satellite TV and happened to stumble upon a show on the SPIKE TV channel called “Surviving Disaster.” From the website:
What will you do when disaster strikes? Spike TV’s new original series Surviving Disaster, led by Navy SEAL Cade Courtley, vividly takes viewers through catastrophic scenarios and arms them with the knowledge needed to survive the unthinkable. Courtley tackles worst-case scenarios and equips viewers with the practical information needed to save their own lives and the lives of their loved ones. Whether the threat is natural or man-made or on a national or personal level, Courtley speaks directly to the viewers and guides them through a comprehensive, step-by-step process to not only survive the big picture disaster, but endure the many dangerous obstacles that may occur within each catastrophic event. While leading viewers out of danger, Courtley not only provides helpful tips and hands-on instruction, but swiftly points out common misconceptions and fatal mistakes. Unlike any other series, Surviving Disaster may actually save lives by providing actions that anyone can perform.
The episode I saw dealt with a nuclear terrorist attack on an American city. I was pretty impressed by the amount of information passed on to the viewer. For example, this particular episode focused on two groups of people who are caught 1.5 miles and 3 miles away, respectively, from a 10-kiloton nuclear detonation. Surprisingly, the group only 1.5 miles from the blast could actually survive the incident. But as the episode revealed, they have to act quick.
While not comprehensive, the information provided in the show offers a pretty good overview of what’s at stake in a particular disaster. It’s a well-made series too, and shouldn’t put you to sleep.
“Surviving Disaster” airs every Tuesday night at 11 PM Pacific-time/10 PM Central-time. Best of all, if you miss an episode— you can watch it on the website, with the following conditions:
Each full episode of this show is available for on week after its on-air premiere. Episodes are added immediately following their premiere date. After one full week of online availability each episode is taken down for one month. After the month has gone by the episode returns and is available for you to watch indefinitely.
Right now, the available full episodes (each just over 40 minutes) include:
• Avalanche
• Home Invasion
• Hurricane
• Fire
• Hijack
